Knowledge Architecture

June 25, 2008

I’m attending a workshop this Friday 27th June 2008 based around the idea of Knowledge Architecture which will help to inform a new role I’m undertaking within the JISC.  As part of the workshop particpants have been asked to think through their own definitions of: architecture; information; and knowledge.  So I thought I’d share my ideas.

Slapped Wrist

May 29, 2008

Currently taking part in a Netskills workshop based on Collaborative Tools for knowledge transfer.  After listening to the section on Blogs I felt a horrible shame in that I haven’t updated my Blog in some time.  I know you don’t want to hear excuses but honestly I’ve been very busy changing roles, organising my wedding, having a holiday (not abroad unfortunately), part exchanging our car and being ill.

There will be some useful updates to the Blog soon particularly relating to knowledge transfer and the new JISC initiative of Business and Community Engagement.  I’m also hoping to add some information regarding the organisation of our wedding which may prove useful to others.

Anyway, must dash as this is part of an exercise and I can’t spend too long on it!

JISC Conference 2008

April 15, 2008

Yes, I am sad.  It’s 23.15 and after finishing watching shameless I can’t seem to sleep with thoughts buzzing around my head about the JISC Conference I’ve just returned from today.  I thoroughly enjoyed the day and thought it was excellently organised and the idea of including social applications an excellent step forward demonstrating its use within our community.

One of the perks of my job is that I get to attend some excellent events of which todays TFPL Sharepoint Summit was one of them. The day basically evolved around the use of Sharepoint within private and public organisations across the UK. Sharepoint seems to signal the death of the EDRMS but then I also can’t ultimately see how Sharepoint is any different – see my colleagues blog RM Futurewatch for more.

The main benefits coming out of any implementation seemed to be down to the review of processes, identification of functional requirements and in all honesty – good project management. The chair (Adrian Dale) summed it up perfectly for me in saying: “There is no such thing as an Information Technology/Management project, only business projects that are supercharged by IT/IM.”.  Success was not down to Sharepoint, it was down to some excellent analysis, planning and innovation from project leaders!

I recently attended a conference on Second Life where I took part in a Machinima workshop. The whole concept in itself is an awesome idea which was presented in a very easy to understand manner by Britta Pollmuller. I thought I’d share with you my first attempt. Unfortunately we had very basic tools so there is no sound but nevertheless it was still a very interesting process. The brief was to find an event in Second Life and create a video using 6, 30sec (approx) scenes highlighting your experience using still shots from various angles.
