Social Software
January 20, 2008
I’m giving a presentation on Social Software at an AUA (Association of University Administrators) members event at Northumbria University come April. I’m also hoping to make a slidecast of the presentation available to everyone via slideshare. I thought I’d share my ideas on the objectives I’m going to cover (given the title it seems appropriate) to see if anybody has any further suggestions. The presentation will last approximately 30mins and I’m hoping to cover the following:
- Intro and Definition – 5mins
- Some of the basic examples i.e. Blogs, Wikis, Social Networking sites, Sharing sites… and how they are currently being used – 10mins
- Issues regarding social software i.e. records management, user buy-in, legalities etc. – 10mins
- The students view and how they feel social software can improve the functioning of their University – 5mins (I have an excellent example of this so be sure to watch out for the slidecast even just for this)
I know this is a rough guide but I’ll add more definitive ideas over the coming weeks and possibly some draft slidecasts to see what people think. I’d be very interested in hearing back from people on anything they feel I should cover and and or real world examples.

There is some awesome work going on in the education sector such as Warwick Blogs (in-house blogging system) which has had a brilliant up-take, with a lot more universities following suit. Then my personal favourite at the moment Edgehill University which allows students to add and drop various apps from their login page i.e. there’s a flickr app, blog app etc. which has a very similar look and feel to facebook. The example I’ll be giving to the administrators is to do with a student who had his/her masters cancelled twice (after applying for a different one). He/she struggled to get answers from the university and began asking questions via facebook where he/she found out the University was lying to him/her originally. Now from my point of view the universities can’t just stick their head in the sand with regards to these types of technology and should be engaging with their audience via these communication streams. I’m not saying drop everything and only use social software but allow it to compliment current practices/processes. All very interesting, I just hope I can deliver it that way, lol!

Cool, I think this may bit a bit above the audience however I’m hoping to talk to the web manager before the event to catch up on what developments are in the pipeline so I’ll be sure to mention this. Cheers for the comments!
