Sky – Problems

More of a question this one. Over the past month or so I’ve been thinking about changing to Sky for my broadband services but have been put off by the customer service my parents and my future parents in law have received. They both only have the Sky TV service. Both of them have major problems with the picture beginning to flicker. My future parents in law were told the problem was their TV being to old and they would need to buy a new one. Funny that because they’ve never had any problems in the past and it’s by no means a majorly old TV.
However, my parents have the exact same problem and have only recently bought a brand new TV. Now they’ve been told sky have extended their services to try and solve the problem and will only come out from now on if my parents cough up £70. I find this slightly outrageous. Has anyone had similar problems or know how to fix it and or thoughts on their package of TV, Phone and Broadband?
